Writing The Self – A Writing Workshop on Memoir and Autofiction

We are calling for applications for ‘Writing the Self’, an immersive two-day workshop on memoir and autofiction writing, led by publisher, editor, writer, and associate professor of writing at Ashoka University, Arpita Das. The workshop invites participants to look closely at their own experiences and transform memories, formative moments, and personal observations into engaging narratives.

Through memory-mining, narrative exercises, and discussions on structure and voice, participants will learn how to identify the stories that matter to them and give these experiences shape on the page.

The workshop combines lec-dem sessions, group discussions, writing exercises, and feedback, with space for reflection and experimentation. It will also explore how AI tools can support (or interfere with) the process of writing from the self.

What will you create?

Throughout the course of the workshop, participants will:

• Explore their memories to identify moments and experiences that hold narrative potential.
• Develop a central thread or idea connecting these experiences.
• Experiment with different narrative structures and storytelling forms.
• Work on developing a distinct and authentic authorial voice.
• Receive feedback on their writing and emerging narrative.
• Gain greater clarity and readiness to continue developing their memoir or autofiction project towards publication.

At the end of the two days, we hope to send our participants away to write their narratives based on themselves with greater readiness for publication.
