My Many Worlds: A Santosh Morajkar Retrospective
My Many Worlds: A Santosh Morajkar Retrospective brings together works by artist Santosh Morajkar, created between 1997 and 2025 and drawn from private and public collections. Presented at the Museum of Goa, the exhibition brings together works from across his artistic journey, offering an opportunity to encounter his practice as a whole and to consider the many ideas, influences and experiences that shaped his distinctive visual language.
Santosh moved between printmaking, drawing and sculpture throughout his practice, but did not treat these as separate artistic identities. The same visual language continued to evolve across mediums, as he drew on prints and sculptures, combined prints with drawings, and transformed his own works into collages. For Santosh, the medium was a means of continuing to explore and develop the ideas that remained central to his practice. Bringing these works together makes visible the continuities, shifts and recurring concerns that run across nearly three decades of his work.
His practice was deeply rooted in the world around him while extending into an imaginative universe of his own. Familiar figures, animals, objects and memories were repeatedly transformed into unexpected forms. Human-animal hybrids, references to mythology and folk traditions, memories of Goa, motorcycles, eroticism and observations from everyday life appear throughout his work. These elements often come together in ways that are playful, strange, humorous and deeply personal. As Santosh described his works, they were extensions of himself – expressions of his memories, imagination, desires and way of seeing.
Much of this body of work is now dispersed across collections, making the opportunity to bring it together particularly significant. The retrospective allows audiences to look beyond individual works and understand the relationships between them, while placing Santosh’s practice within the wider artistic and cultural context of Goa. It is also an important act of documentation: a way of ensuring that an artist’s work remains visible, available for inquiry and open to continued engagement beyond his lifetime.
For the Museum of Goa, My Many Worlds forms part of our commitment to making art accessible and creating opportunities for artists and their practices to be encountered, studied and remembered. More than a retrospective, the exhibition is an invitation to look closely at Santosh Morajkar’s many worlds and to discover the connections between his life, his surroundings and the body of work he created.
