Where Salt Meets Sweet | Fish Curry and Rice

Where freshwater meets the sea, mangroves create ecosystems that support a wide range of life. They protect coastlines, provide habitats for fish and other species, and are closely connected to the lives and livelihoods of communities along Goa’s rivers and coast. Yet their importance is often noticed most when these ecosystems are threatened or lost.

The fifth chapter of the Goa Foundation series, Fish Curry & Rice, is titled Where Salt Meets Sweet, and begins with a conversation with Claude Alvares and Aaron Lobo on mangroves and the many relationships they hold between land, water, people and other forms of life. The conversation will look at mangroves not simply as vegetation, but as living ecosystems that are part of Goa’s ecological and social landscape.

Together, they will explore what these ecosystems sustain, what is at stake when they are altered or destroyed, and what it means to understand Goa’s rivers, wetlands and coastlines as interconnected systems rather than separate spaces.
