On The Beauty of Canacona
Activist Ramesh Gauns reflects on the cultural, ecological, and social landscapes of Canacona, drawing from decades of grassroots work and public engagement.
A lifelong activist, Gauns has been associated with the Rashtra Seva Dal since 1969—an organisation committed to values of democracy, secularism, socialism, and fraternity, with roots in India’s freedom struggle and Goa’s liberation movement. His work spans multiple movements, including anti-superstition campaigns, the Knit India movement led by Baba Amte, and youth mobilisations such as a nationwide cycle yatra across 25 states.
He has collaborated with prominent figures such as Sunderlal Bahuguna and contributed to educational initiatives like the Sane Guruji Kathamala. His activism extends to Dalit movements, environmental advocacy, and social reform—having even officiated 17 inter-caste marriages as a stand against Brahminical structures. A non-believer, he has consistently worked outside religious frameworks.
Gauns has also worked closely with environmentalist Madhav Gadgil on issues such as ecologically sensitive zones in the Konkan, the environmental impact of mining, and the Mopa airport project.
