Topic: From Bhogadand to Leslie’s Broken Guitar Strings: On Konkani Translation and Related Goan Issues

A conversation with translator Augusto Pinto and academic R. Benedito Ferrão on Hema Naik’s novel Bhogadand and its English translation, Leslie’s Broken Guitar Strings. The discussion will explore the role of translation in preserving Goan literature while reflecting on the themes of migration, language, identity, and gender that emerge through the novel.

Topic: The Takeover of Our Tablelands

Inspired by the third chapter of Fish Curry and Rice, this programme examines the ecological and cultural significance of Goa’s lateritic plateaus, locally known as the Pathar or Sada lands. Environmentalist Claude Alvares, Prof. Janarthanam, and Arun Ganesh will discuss the biodiversity, environmental challenges, and future of these fragile landscapes. The session will also feature a screening of a film by Varad Giri exploring the unique plateau ecosystem and the life it sustains.

The screening will be followed by a discussion on loneliness, empathy, mental health, and the possibility of hope through cinema.

Topic: The Story Behind Goa’s Weaves: People, Culture, History, and Handloom

A presentation by textile specialist Poonam Pandit exploring Goa’s history and cultural traditions through its indigenous weaves, handloom practices, and textile heritage. Drawing from decades of research and engagement with weaving communities, the session traces the evolution of Goa’s handloom traditions while highlighting the artisans, histories, and craftsmanship that continue to shape them today.

A screening of Raghu Rai: An Unframed Portrait, directed by filmmaker and photographer Avani Rai. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Avani Rai on documentary filmmaking, visual storytelling, and the making of the film.
