Holding Three Things Together: Coffee, Forests, and Livelihoods
Coffee is often experienced as a simple, everyday ritual, but its journey begins in complex landscapes where ecology, labour, and economy intersect. In this session, Arshiya Bose of Baza Coffee reflects on nearly a decade of working closely with smallholder and indigenous coffee producers across India. The talk will explore what it truly means to build a business that attempts to sustain three interdependent systems—coffee cultivation, forest ecosystems, and community livelihoods.
Through on-ground insights, Arshiya will unpack the difficult negotiations, compromises, and ethical considerations that shape such work. The session will also consider the broader implications of conscious consumption and how our daily choices connect to fragile environments and rural economies. This is an opportunity to look beyond the cup and engage with the layered realities of producing coffee responsibly in today’s world.
