From the Ground Up: A Gandhian Journey through Development

What does it mean to work on poverty and development from the ground up? In the late 1970s, Frances and Sanjay Sinha were young graduates looking for ways to engage with the social and economic challenges facing India. Influenced by Gandhian principles and the belief that development needed to begin with an understanding of people’s lived realities, they began working with NGOs and researchers closely engaged with communities.

Their work began in the years following the Emergency and the election of the Janata Party government in 1977, at a time when Gandhian ideas were being revisited and debated in India. Over the decades that followed, their work took them through research, programme development and microfinance, bringing them into sustained engagement with questions of poverty, livelihoods and socio-economic development.

In this session, Frances and Sanjay will reflect on the principles that shaped their approach to development, the people and institutions they encountered along the way, and what they have learnt from decades of working across research, development and microfinance.
