From Bhogadand to Leslie’s broken Guitar Strings: On Konkani translation and related Goan Issues

This program features translator Augusto Pinto and academic R. Benedito Ferrao, who will discuss Hema Naik’s novel Bhogadand which was translated as Leslie’s Broken Guitar Strings by Pinto. Their exchange will delve into related language and socio-cultural issues such as migration and gender equity that the book raises.

Augusto Pinto is a retired Associate Professor of English, and a satirist, literary critic, and essayist whose work has explored themes related to Goan society and culture. His translations have appeared in several notable anthologies, including The Salt of the Earth: Stories from Rustic Goa, A Garland of Poems, and The Greatest Goan Stories Ever Told.

R. Benedito Ferrão is an Associate Professor of English and Asian & Pacific Islander American Studies at William & Mary (Virginia, USA). He has received fellowships from the Fulbright, Mellon, Endeavour, and Rotary programs, the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies, and the American Institute of Indian Studies.

His books include the forthcoming Across Continents: Writing Goans, Making Worlds (2026) and the edited volume, Goa, Portugal, Mozambique: The Many Lives of Vamona Navelcar (2017), which accompanied an exhibition of the same title that he curated at Fundação Oriente, Goa. He has also curated exhibitions for various artists.
