Viraj Naik

Artist

Brief info

Viraj Naik is a visual artist based in Goa, working across printmaking, sculpture, and installation. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Goa College of Art, Goa University (1993–1998), and completed his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Arts, University of Hyderabad (1998–2000), where he later served as a guest faculty member.

Naik’s artistic practice is deeply informed by ancient mythology, science fiction, and the visual traditions of Hieronymus Bosch, Indian miniature painting, and global popular culture. Employing the grotesque as an expressive and aesthetic language, he creates alternative human landscapes populated by hybrid characters drawn from diverse cultures and time periods. His sculptural and installative works further expand these themes, exploring imagination, identity, and the complexities of the human condition.

He has held solo exhibitions at Galerie Nvya, New Delhi (2006), The Museum Gallery, Mumbai (2004), and Galerie Cidade, Goa. His recognitions include a Merit Scholarship from the University of Hyderabad (1998) and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) State Award, Goa (1997 and 2000). He has exhibited his work at Janela.
