Brief info
Praneet Soi, born in 1971 in Kolkata, is an Indian contemporary artist whose practice spans painting and installation. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Painting. During the economic liberalization of the 1990s, he briefly worked as a visualizer in New Delhi’s emerging advertising industry, an experience that informed his understanding of imagery and visual culture.
In 1998, Soi moved to the United States to study at the University of California, San Diego. He later attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2001 and participated in the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten residency in Amsterdam (2002–2003). Since then, he has divided his time between Amsterdam and Kolkata.
Soi’s practice is shaped by an ongoing dialogue with filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin, whose ideas on narrative and representation have influenced Soi’s exploration of the image as a layered and mediated construct. His works are held in several public and private collections, including the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi.Praneet Soi also presented his work in the exhibition “Posthumous Dialogues with Francis Newton Souza.”
