Nalini Elvino de Sousa is an ethnomusicologist, educator, and documentary filmmaker whose work is deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of Goa. Her multidisciplinary practice bridges education, literature, and film, exploring themes of music, memory, migration, and identity while making these narratives accessible to diverse audiences.
Her documentary The Club examines migration through music, highlighting the shared spaces and lived experiences of the Goan diaspora in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Another significant work, Kantar Goa, focuses on the art form of cantaram, songs from the Goan tiatr tradition, tracing their evolution from stage performances to records, radio, and social media. The film draws on the works of notable artists such as C. Alvares, Remmie Colaso, and Jacinto Vaz, emphasizing their enduring cultural relevance.
As an educator, Nalini has been engaged with schools and educational institutions for over two decades, particularly in the field of language education. She presented her work in the exhibition “Seen/Unseen.”
