Krisna Murti is an Indonesia artist and a pioneer of new media art whose practice has significantly shaped the development of video and media art in the region since the early 1990s. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art and Design at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in 1981.
Over the course of his career, Murti has presented more than 30 solo exhibitions and has participated in major international events, including the Havana Biennale (2000), Gwangju Biennale (2000), Unfolding Perspectives ARS 01 in Helsinki (2001), and the Venice Biennale (2005). His video installation My Ancestors are Sangiran Man (1999) was showcased at the first Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale and is now part of the collection of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan. His work has also been featured in significant media art platforms such as Impakt, Utrecht; transmediale, Berlin; and Thermocline of Art: New Asian Waves at ZKM Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe.
A pioneer in Indonesian new media art, Murti employs the codes of the mass media industry to question the mystification of reality and to create a critical meta-discourse on contemporary society. Since 2003, he has served as a guest lecturer in new media studies at the Postgraduate School of the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta. In 2009, he published Essays on Video Art and New Media: Indonesia and Beyond, reflecting his ongoing engagement with the evolution of media culture.
