Kendell Geers

Artist

Brief info

Kendell Geers is a South African-born, Belgian artist known for his interdisciplinary practice that engages with themes of identity, spirituality, and socio-political activism. In a symbolic gesture of self-creation, he redefined his birth as May 1968, positioning his life itself as a work of art. Describing his approach as “AniMystikAKtivist,” Geers weaves together Afro-European traditions such as animism, alchemy, mysticism, and ritual, often infused with black humour, irony, and cultural contradiction.

His work has been widely exhibited in major international exhibitions, including Documenta 11 (2002) and the Venice Biennale (2007). Significant solo exhibitions include Heart of Darkness at the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Third World Disorder at Goodman Gallery, Cape Town; and Songs of Innocence and of Experience at Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg. His travelling exhibition Irrespektiv was presented across Newcastle, Ghent, Salamanca, and Lyon, and his work has also been featured at Art Basel (Art Unlimited), Manifesta 9 in Genk, and a major survey at Haus der Kunst, Munich. More recently, he presented the solo exhibition The Second Coming (Do What Thou Wilt) at Rua Red, Dublin. Kendell Geers has exhibited his work at Janela.
