Julio D’ Souza
Artist
Brief info
Julio D’Souza, born in 1975 in Goa, is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the strangeness embedded in everyday life. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Goa College of Art in 2001.
D’Souza’s work is characterized by an interest in the grotesque, where elements of distortion and ambiguity evoke both discomfort and beauty. Through this approach, he encourages viewers to reconsider conventional notions of aesthetics, suggesting that an appreciation of ugliness is essential to understanding beauty. His paintings often reveal the uncanny aspects of ordinary experiences, inviting deeper reflection on perception and human emotion.
He has participated in over 20 group exhibitions across India—including Goa, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai—as well as internationally in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the Havana Biennale, Cuba (2012). His solo exhibition was held at Gallery One, New Delhi, in 2012. Between 1996 and 2005, he received the State Art Award for Painting and Graphics from the Kala Academy, Goa. Julio D’Souza presented his work in the exhibition “Posthumous Dialogues with Francis Newton Souza.”
