Whip Spiders, Whip Scorpions & Tarantulas: The ‘Not-so-Charismatic’ Wildlife of Goa

Beyond the Big Cats: Goa’s Secret Arachnid World with Dr. Manoj R. Borkar

When we think of Goa’s wildlife, our minds often jump to leopards, exotic birds, or crocodiles. But hidden in the undergrowth are lesser-known — yet equally fascinating — creatures: Whip Spiders, Whip Scorpions, and Tarantulas.

Through decades of groundbreaking research and tireless advocacy, Dr. Manoj R. Borkar has brought these elusive arachnids into the spotlight. From documenting first sightings to advocating their role as bioindicators, his work has redefined how we understand and value Goa’s rich—but often overlooked—biodiversity. He has co-authored Goa’s first Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan and crafted Wildlife Management Plans for the Cotigao and Netravali Wildlife Sanctuaries.

A scientist, poet, columnist, and orator, Dr. Borkar invites us to look beyond conventional notions of beauty and fear, and instead, engage with the intricate lives of the creatures that scuttle, cling, and camouflage in silence. This session is a call to reimagine the wild, and to celebrate those who are vital to our ecosystems, yet remain unseen and unsung.
