The Story Behind Goa’s Weaves: People, Culture, History, and Handloom
This presentation traces Goa’s history, culture and traditions through the lens of textiles, its indigenous weaves, ancestral handloom practices, traditional attire and contemporary design interventions. Drawing from Poonam Pandit’s long engagement with Goa’s weaving communities, it brings together stories of artisans, weaving processes, collaborative projects and everyday village life to reveal textiles as living expressions of culture, ecology and craftsmanship.
Through close work with the last practising traditional weaving family, alongside research into earlier weaving lineages, Poonam reconstructs Goa’s handloom networks from the Portuguese era to the present day.
Poonam Pandit is a seasoned textile specialist whose multidisciplinary experience spans design, academia, artisan and craft-cluster engagement, export, retail, consultancy, entrepreneurship, research, writing and the arts.
