Lakshmi Subramanian explores the history of modern Indian business through individual stories of enterprise and innovation, focusing on Western India’s rise as a commercial and industrial hub in the 19th century. She highlights both visionary entrepreneurs and the broader economic context that shapes their journeys.
She has a long and distinguished research and teaching career. She serves as a historian and previously held positions as a Professor of History at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, and as a Visiting Professor of History at BITS, Pilani Goa. Her special areas of interest include the history of the Indian Ocean, the social and economic history of modern India, and the history of music and performance in India. She has authored several books, with her latest work, India Before the Ambanis, published by Penguin in 2024.
