The Curious Case of the Coastal Zones of Goa

Goa’s coastlines, rivers, and sea front *are* more than scenic stretches of sand—they *are* fragile ecosystems, cultural lifelines, and natural buffers against climate disasters. But today, they *face* threats like never before. Rapid, unsustainable development, constructions, illegal tapping of groundwater, and weak enforcement of regulations *push* these vital zones to the brink.

In this talk, Judith Almeida, a long-time coastal activist from Colva, *shares* her journey on the frontlines of the fight to protect Goa’s shores. Drawing from years of grassroots experience, she *explains* why Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ) matter, how they work, and what *is* at stake if we fail to uphold them.

From rising sea levels and eroded beaches to disappearing dunes, this session *unpacks* the serious crisis unfolding along our riverfronts and beaches—and why the sanctity and ecology of the coast *remain* essential not just for today, but for generations to come.
