The Bitter-Fruit Tree: Stories from Vanishing Forests
There is a Goa that does not glitter by the sea. It breathes deeper inland, where forests still whisper old hymns to the wind. Here, Sahitya Akademi Award winner Prakash Parienkar sets The Bitter-Fruit Tree and Other Stories, translated into English by Vidya Pai — a work that refuses to look away from the slow bruising of this land in the name of progress. Across thirteen stories, Parienkar captures a Goa caught between memory and machinery, where ancient trees fall to make way for ambition, and villages once bound by folklore and faith watch their roots turn to dust.
He is joined in conversation by Dr. Glenis Mendonça, who is attuned to the language of transition — between Konkani and English, between past and present, between belonging and erasure.
