Street Voices & Candlelight Protests

A year ago, the people of Siolim took to the streets when plans to widen roads threatened the felling of over 134 age-old trees.

This unique people’s movement was sparked by the heartless butchering of almost 31 trees that lined up the main street of Siolim. The Candlelight protestors stood their ground for an entire week—until the authorities relented. People’s power of collective action and team work culminated in the Bombay High Court at Goa granting a stay order against trees cutting that stands to-date.

Avertino Miranda, convenor of the Goa Green Brigade, along with his fellow activists, will take us through their journey of 7-day peaceful revolution, resilience, team work, the strategies they deployed, and what it truly means to be passionate protectors of Goa’s natural trees heritage.
