Phytoplankton World: The Unseen Heroes of Marine Life – Edition 2

Step into a glowing underwater world and discover the tiny organisms that keep our oceans alive.

Phytoplankton World is an immersive art and learning experience by the Children’s Art Studio at the Museum of Goa, where art, science and imagination come together to explore the hidden world of phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton are microscopic organisms that form the foundation of marine food webs and play an important role in producing 50% of the world’s oxygen and regulating Earth’s climate. Though too small to see with the naked eye, they support an enormous world of life.

In this immersive installation, the Old GMC Complex in Panjim transforms into an underwater-inspired world filled with glowing artworks, seaweed-like forms, marine ecosystems and enlarged representations of phytoplankton inspired by what we see through a microscope.

Visitors can explore the space, discover how these tiny organisms connect to the larger ocean ecosystem, and encounter stories and ideas about marine life, climate and our relationship with the natural world.

The experience also explores how art can be made from ocean waste, transforming discarded materials collected from beaches into creative works and encouraging us to think about what we leave behind in our oceans.

Designed especially with children and young people in mind, Phytoplankton World is also open to families, educators, adults and anyone curious about the unseen world beneath the surface.

The project is supported by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), with Mayor Rohit Monserrate’s support, and is presented at the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) as venue partner; bringing this glowing world of marine life to the heart of Panjim.

School Visits

Schools can register for a guided experience through the installation followed by a hands-on art activity. Students will explore the world of phytoplankton and respond to what they discover through making and experimentation.

About the Children’s Art Studio

The Children’s Art Studio (CAS) at the Museum of Goa creates spaces where children can engage with art, culture, science and critical ideas through hands-on experiences. CAS uses creativity as a way of encouraging curiosity, empathy, observation and reflection, helping young audiences explore the world through multiple perspectives.

The installation has been conceptualised and designed by Sharada Kerkar, Tincy Paulose and P. S. Soorya.
