Pari: Stories from the Margins
In a media world that often overlooks the voices of people living on the margins, Jyoti YL’s journalism stands out, and she has won numerous awards and accolades. Her work at the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI), traces the lives of those pushed furthest to the peripheries: tribal women like Tulshi Bhagat, who gathers palash leaves from the forests of Shahapur and travels over 40 kilometers to Mumbai to earn a meagre living; Bhil women in the Satpura ranges of Nandurbar who suffer chronic pain from untreated uterine prolapse; displaced communities uprooted by the Samruddhi Highway and other development projects.
From Thane’s vanishing riversides to Amravati’s demolished schools for nomadic children, her stories bring us the truth of how marginalized lives are routinely disregarded by state policy. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Jyoti covered children with visual and intellectual disabilities and captured how isolation had deepened their vulnerabilities. Reporting from the ground in all these areas, her journalism is a combination of evidence and empathy, along with great storytelling.
