Invisible Work, Visible Heat

Extreme heat is pictured as an outdoor problem – a construction site, a crowded street. But turn a thermal camera on a home, and the story changes. In Making the ‘Invisible’ Visible, an audio-visual feature that uses thermal imaging to reveal how tin roofs, concrete buildings, cramped kitchens, and poor ventilation trap heat inside the homes – turning everyday chores into hours of endurance. Here women describe living through it: sleepless nights, nosebleeds, wetting clothes and sitting by an open fridge to cool down. Following the screening, Sonali is joined by journalist Shreya to talk about what’s driving this heat, why it stays invisible, and what could actually change it.

Sonali Verma leads communications at the Sustainable Futures Collaborative, a climate and environmental policy research organisation. She was a journalist at Hindustan Times and The Wire. She co-created this project, and it has been shown at Godrej’s Conscious Collective, Mumbai Climate Week, the India Heat Summit, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bengaluru.

Shreya Raman is an independent journalist and writes on gender, labour, health, and climate for Behanbox, IndiaSpend, Foreign Policy, and Scroll, among others. She has won the Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity and the Likho Award for Excellence in Media.
