India Street Lettering: A Journey Through Typographic Craft &Culture

In the book, India Street Lettering: A Journey Through Typographic Craft & Culture, Pooja Saxena shines a spotlight on the country’s urban letterforms and the surprising stories behind them. This living typographic archive exists on the fringes of mainstream design discourse, and India Street Lettering brings it to the fore, celebrating the artistic expression, linguistic diversity, and historical intrigue found in the vibrant letterforms across the country.

Pooja Saxena is an award-winning typeface designer and typographer who works between her independent practice, Matra Type, and TypeTogether, where she designs and engineers fonts. Her work focuses on Indic scripts, especially Devanagari, and on India’s street and vernacular lettering traditions.

Pooja is in conversation with Avani Tanya, an interdisciplinary artist specialising in bookmaking and photography, whose practice draws on images, found objects, sculpture, and oral histories to explore urban life, memory, and the stories embedded in collections.
