A Voyage to Permanence

An exhibition celebrating visual poetry

The Museum of Goa (MOG) presents A Voyage to Permanence, a three-day exhibition celebrating the visual language of independent filmmaker Purandar Chaudhuri. Bringing together experimental cinema, photography, sound, and visual essays, the exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to engage with cinema beyond the screen, where moving images become spaces for contemplation and visual poetry.

The project was conceived by Jooby Yohannan, a well-known curator from Bangalore, & Curated by renowned art critic and curator Johny ML, with exhibition visuals by Prakash Braggs. A Voyage to Permanence revolves around three of Chaudhuri’s seminal experimental films: Impressions of Mingling, Tremors, and Dhushor. Together, these works investigate themes of migration, labour, impermanence and the human condition, inviting viewers into an immersive landscape where abstraction and lived experience intersect.

Rather than documenting social realities in a conventional sense, Chaudhuri’s films employ monochromatic imagery, sparse dialogue, and a fluid interplay between still and moving images to evoke the emotional and philosophical dimensions of existence. His cinematic practice resists linear storytelling, offering meditative reflections on displacement, collective memory, and the fragile continuity between past and present.

The exhibition programme unfolds over three days:

• 12 August: Continuous screening of Impressions of Mingling alongside the exhibition of photographic works and alternative prints.
• 13 August: Continuous screening of Tremors within the exhibition space.
• 14 August: A special evening screening of Dhushor in the Museum auditorium, followed by an audience interaction with members of the creative team.

The exhibition will also mark the launch of the Goa Cyanotype Notebook, celebrating alternative photographic processes and image-making traditions.

A conversation will accompany the release of the photobook and screening, featuring Jayanth Kodkani, a well-known journalist and writer who has deep interests in Cinema & Literature, and Nemiraj Shetty, visual artist, curator, and one of the founding members of the INTACH Mangalore chapter.
