Velha Goa or Old Goa has some striking monuments that stand tall, telling us the tale of the city that once was the capital of the Portuguese Estado da Índia. One of the monuments that has stood the test of time is the Convent of Santa Monica located on the Holy Hill in Old Goa. The building, easily recognizable by the flying buttresses, was Asia’s first and largest convent. When it was constructed (1606 -1627), the convent was large enough to accommodate over 100 nuns. Being a cloistered convent, the vast building was provided with everything necessary for the comfort and convenience of its inmates. Many ladies sought admission into the convent with great zeal and enthusiasm. The Convent declined in importance by the 19th century and ceased to be a cloistered space.
In the 21st century, the Convent is used as an educational institute for nuns and the Museum of Christian Art is housed in one part of the Convent.
