The handicrafts of Goa have a special place, however, crochet, in particular, makes up the heart and soul of these handicrafts. The craft of crochet came to Goa with the arrival of nuns and missionaries in the 15th century since then, the craft of making crochet items has been passed on from one generation to another. Joana Monteiro has been on the receiving end of this art, learning crochet from her mother. Her mother was instrumental in creating her love for needlework as she would utilize her spare time in embroidery, knitting, crochet, tatting, and much more. Joana has specialized in Textiles and Clothing from Goa College of Home Science and became an educator for Higher Secondary in the vocational stream of commercial garment designing and making. Presently, she is teaching in a school and wants to promote different forms of needlework among children to keep crochet alive.
