SUMMARY:A Voyage to Permanence
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition celebrating visual poetry \nThe Museum of Goa (MOG) presents A Voyage to Permanence\, a three-day exhibition celebrating the visual language of independent filmmaker Purandar Chaudhuri. Bringing together experimental cinema\, photography\, sound\, and visual essays\, the exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to engage with cinema beyond the screen\, where moving images become spaces for contemplation and visual poetry. \nThe project was conceived by Jooby Yohannan\, a well-known curator from Bangalore\, & Curated by renowned art critic and curator Johny ML\, with exhibition visuals by Prakash Braggs. A Voyage to Permanence revolves around three of Chaudhuri’s seminal experimental films: Impressions of Mingling\, Tremors\, and Dhushor. Together\, these works investigate themes of migration\, labour\, impermanence and the human condition\, inviting viewers into an immersive landscape where abstraction and lived experience intersect. \nRather than documenting social realities in a conventional sense\, Chaudhuri’s films employ monochromatic imagery\, sparse dialogue\, and a fluid interplay between still and moving images to evoke the emotional and philosophical dimensions of existence. His cinematic practice resists linear storytelling\, offering meditative reflections on displacement\, collective memory\, and the fragile continuity between past and present. \nThe exhibition programme unfolds over three days: \n\n12 August: Continuous screening of Impressions of Mingling alongside the exhibition of photographic works and alternative prints.\n13 August: Continuous screening of Tremors within the exhibition space.\n14 August: A special evening screening of Dhushor in the Museum auditorium\, followed by an audience interaction with members of the creative team.\n\nThe exhibition will also mark the launch of the Goa Cyanotype Notebook\, celebrating alternative photographic processes and image-making traditions. \nA conversation will accompany the release of the photobook and screening\, featuring Jayanth Kodkani\, a well-known journalist and writer who has deep interests in Cinema & Literature\, and Nemiraj Shetty\, visual artist\, curator\, and one of the founding members of the INTACH Mangalore chapter.  \n

SUMMARY:The Stories of Justice\, Equality\, and Love: Through the Cinema of the World
DESCRIPTION:An immersive residency in storytelling through cinema with author\, columnist & researcher Harsh Mander. \nWe are calling out for applications for a 3-day immersive course focused on empathy building aims to take participants on a journey through the lived experiences of impoverishment\, discrimination\, hate\, violence\, and the resilience of vulnerable and dispossessed communities in India and across the world. Rooted in the framework of empathy\, this course aims to use storytelling through cinema to create a space for ethical reflection and critical analysis\, fostering deep engagement with social justice issues through the power of cinema. \nProgram structure \nThe course will take place over 3 days\, with 3 film screenings each day followed by in-depth discussions. Each film will be introduced with a brief contextual overview of its social and human narratives\, as well as its aesthetic qualities. The films will act as an entry point for exploring larger themes such as the politics of hate\, inequality\, state power\, and forms of resistance. He leads the national initiative Karwan-e-Mohabbat (Caravan of Love)\, working towards solidarity\, healing\, and justice in response to rising hate violence. He holds a PhD from Vrije University\, Amsterdam\, and has taught at institutions including Heidelberg University\, IIM Ahmedabad\, JNU\, and international universities such as MIT and UCLA. \n\nA prolific author\, he has written 25 books\, including Partitions of the Heart and Ash in the Belly. Before the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950\, Tibet functioned as a sovereign state\, exercising authority over its territory\, people\, and foreign relations. This exhibition brings together archival records\, artifacts\, photographs\, and personal collections to present material evidence of Tibet’s independent existence in the modern world. Through lived experience and tangible proof\, it invites visitors to consider how a nation persists—politically\, culturally\, and spiritually—despite displacement. \n  \n \nFollowing the Chinese military occupation of Tibet in the 1950s\, tens of thousands of Tibetans fled into exile\, forming communities across India and beyond. Exile reshaped Tibetan life but did not erase identity. Cultivated on the subcontinent for nearly 5\,000 years\, the mango is more than a fruit: it is embedded in mythology\, ritual\, art\, and literature. In classical narratives\, it appears in the realm of love and devotion\, from Kama\, the god of love\, whose arrows were tipped with mango blossoms\, to Lord Ganesha\, who is believed to have received it as a divine gift. During Portuguese rule\, the fruit travelled across continents through colonial trade\, acquiring a global presence. \nToday\, India alone is home to over 1\,500 varieties\, each marked by its own distinctive story of naming\, cultivation\, and cultural association. He will perform a live solo set of his cherished compositions\, along with improvisations inspired by marine ecosystems. \nUnknown to many\, India is home to over 800 species of seaweed. Along Goa’s coast\, Sargassum forests form dense underwater canopies from November to March. These rich\, biodiverse spaces support marine life but remain largely unseen and understudied.
