    Vasco Chili

    Vasco-da-Gama was responsible for introducing chillies into India. My sculpture is an ode to Vasco.

    Though Goa does not produce chillies in large quantities as do Andhra Pradesh (Guntur) or Karnataka (Byadgi), we have about 30 varieties of chillies here. This number is the result of the grafting experiments of the Jesuit priests and cross-pollination. There is a tiny white chilly in Goa called ‘Tarvoti mirsang’ (Sailor’s chilli). It is very pungent and is used to make papad.
